From One Degree of Glory to Another

‘We will struggle with sin, but we don’t lose heart because we know that even though our outer person is wasting away, our inner person is being renewed day by day by the work of the spirit as we partake of His means of grace.  Indeed, seeing him through the Word, the sacraments, and the church will impel and motivate our transformation.’

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.” 1 John 3.1-3

Where will we see God’s glory? We see it in the gospel, of course.

“If we want to see God’s glory, if we long for ourselves and others to be transformed into godliness, we must dwell on the gospel, where his glory is most clearly seen.  It is the gospel into which we are to look, and it is by the power of the gospel that we will be changed.

Paul informs us that by his grace God has shone the ‘light of the gospel of the glory of Christ’(2 Cor 4.4) into our hearts.  It is in this light that we see everything else: who he is, what he has done, who we are and how we change.  It is this light that first enabled us to see our glorious Savior, and it is this light that continues to transform us.  Unlike unbelievers, who have blinded minds, we have received from God eyes to see ‘the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ’(2 Cor 4.6)  The knowledge of God’s glory is revealed to us as we look upon the face of the Son.  And it is this knowledge that will transform us.”

Does ‘endless naval-gazing’have the power to change us?

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image

from one degree of glory to another. 2 Cor 3.18

“We are all hoping for change and progress, Christian and non-Christian alike.  In contrast to our culture’s unabashedly self-exalting approach to personal perfectibility, serious Christians are intent on something more than merely ‘getting it together.’  We are hoping instead for growth in godliness, or what is commonly referred to as sanctification.  Rather than seek a quick fix, we look inward, at our own sinfulness.  We diligently practice confession and repentance.  We are encouraged to examine ourselves, to search out sin and unbelief.

Although we are commanded to tackle sin in this way, there is a problem here too.  If we focus too narrowly on our failures and never take our eyes off ourselves, we can become mired in our endless naval-gazing, and, even as Christians, simply looking at ourselves doesn’t have the power to transform us.  If we keep our eyes riveted on ourselves, even as we routinely practice confession and repentance, we will stay bogged down with the same old sins.  We need to set our eyes on something beyond ourselves or our failures.  We need to glimpse something that is more powerful.  We need to see Jesus Christ and the transforming glory of God.”

A Tale of Two Cities

The presents have all been bought, wrapped, toted, unwrapped and distributed to their new homes.

The cookies (the consensus was that they looked like Easter Eggs – not Christmas litebulbs) were mixed, cut, baked, frosted, eaten, eaten and eaten.  Ugh.

The kids, the family, the parents and the cat have all been hugged, snuggled, and kissed goodbye.

Tears have been shed.

And now it is time to go back to my other life.

Every time I travel ‘home’ to Chicago I feel a bit schizophrenic.  I am torn between loving the readily-available family full of love and hugs; yet hating the weather, the pace of days, and the anxious urban lifestyle. While in Charlotte, however, I struggle with a similar tension; loving my quiet, southern life but hating the empty void apart from those who know me better than anyone ever can or ever will.  The conflict runs deep, and in the moments between cherished visits a tug-of-war occurs within my being.

In Chicago (in addition to the constant identity I have of ‘wife’) I am a mother, a daughter, a sister, a sis-in-law, a mom-in-law, a soon-to-be me maw, a cousin, a niece.

In Charlotte I am a neighbor, a member of a covenant family, a teacher, a student, a leader, a responsible citizen who votes.

In Chicago I have history; I grew up there, I can find my way around even in my sleep, and every corner reminds me of a moment in my past.

In Charlotte I see the future. I’ve matured here. I can’t find my way beyond the four recognizable corners I’ve discovered, but it is where I expanded my horizons, moved away from all that was familiar and comfortable and I grew up.

In Chicago I say I’m from Charlotte.

In Charlotte I say I’m from Chicago.  Weird.

In Chicago I see those I love, I remember how I’ve loved them through the years, the hopes I’ve had for them, and I delight in who, through God’s providential will, they have become.

In Charlotte I pray for those I love, and trust that in God’s providential will they will one day belong-to and glorify Him.

In Chicago I remember incredible joys, and devastating heartaches.  I think of my youth and my dreams and the hopes that I had in times past that, sadly, never came to be.

In Charlotte I hope. I have nothing to remind me of the things I once had or once wanted and now, interestingly, no longer care very much about.  I am left to depend simply on the hope I have for an eternity with Him.

In Chicago I’m the baby, the little sister, the mom who looks at stuff strangely.

In Charlotte I’m older and wiser, a Titus 2 woman with an opinion, an idea, thoughts that are valuable.

In Chicago I am cold! And it’s messy and slushy and people are cold and rude and miserable (can’t say as though I blame them!)  My sanctification is in real time, real experiences.

In Charlotte I’m still cold…just not frigid…and I sit in a warm home, in my comfy chair, and I look outside at ever-green trees and ever present flowers while studying and learning and knowing Him as He reveals Himself on the pages of the book He wrote.  My sanctification is knowledge.

In Chicago I can’t wait to go home.

In Charlotte I can’t wait to go home.

So often our friends and family ask if we think we will move back ‘home.’  With a grandbaby on the way I’m sure it looks like our little adventure ought to be drawing to a close and we need to go back to where ‘we belong.’

But I no longer know where I belong.  So I live torn between two cities, two unique ‘selves,’ a home and a home.

I told you I need counseling.

Happy New Year friends and family, both old and new….

O’Hare Airport and Sanctification

O’Hare Airport and Sanctification

“Ladies and Gentleman we’d like to welcome you to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.  The time locally is 8:22 am, Central Standard Time.  Please remain in your seats with your seatbelts fastened until we have reached the gate and the captain has turned off the “fasten your seat-belt sign….”

Thar she blows.  I thought it was crummy yesterday in Charlotte.  What’s a lil rain/snow/sleet/wintery mix – this is not a ‘bread and milk’ event– when you can have snow?  Blowing snow.  Blowing, slushy, stick to your bones stuff that everyone who lives in the south thinks they want for Christmas.  Here it is folks…enjoy.

It’s only fun in pictures.  Pictures like ‘White Christmas,’ or ‘Holiday Inn,’ or best of all, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’; oh wait, that’s on a set in a Hollywood Studio lot.

My point exactly.

So I’ve just barely finished writing 105 pages, 28397 words, and I can’t wait to sit back down at my computer and WRITE!  It’s an illness.  It just seems every time I get on a plane I am inspired to record the gazillion strange thoughts that go through my head.  I must be inspired by the extraordinary experience that accompanies spending time with fellow sheep as we gather together to fly through the wide blue yonder in a stock car.  Okay, a stock car with carpet.

Yep, sheep.  You caught the comparison.  Sheep are dumb.  Now, I consider myself one as well, so that gives me permission to rail (no pun intended– unless taken) on the obvious stupidity of those who maneuver the labyrinth called ‘airport.’

There are 6 types of travelers who walk the halls of a terminal; each deserves their own lane.  I propose O’Hare consider the following lanes to accommodate these specific species of traveling sheep….

There’s the cell phone user.  He or she is typically making a VERY IMPORTANT CALL (‘like…omagod….you shoulda seen what she had on!!!’) Businessmen are NOT immune to this behavior—have you ever listened (or should I say can you HELP but listen) when a suit is speaking into their blackberry?  This traveling cell phone user is oblivious to those around him or her; they walk with their head down.  They talk with their hands; they talk with their arms.  They whack fellow passengers with their gesturing limbs.  The cell phone user deserves their own lane.

Then there’s the kid/parent/businessperson/senior citizen text messaging.  Closely related to the cell phone user, this passenger is actually just a bit more dangerous.  They too are looking down as they walk, madly typing away important messages (‘like…omagod….you shoulda seen what she had on!!!’) on a 2” x 2.5” box while pulling at least one travel bag AND balancing a 5lb computer with a slippery leather strap on their shoulder.  The text-messaging patrons NEED their own lane.

Next we have the, ‘we are not in a hurry and we need to walk together’ crowd; yes, crowd.  These folks have time between flights, are traveling en masse, and insist on walking 5 across the aisle.  Hopefully you aren’t late for your flight (or need to go to the restroom) when you encounter these sheep. Baaaahhhh. Make ‘um walk single file in a lane, I say.

There’s the traveling family.  Since I completely understand the dynamics of air travel with children and how difficult it is to lasso them as soon as they learn how to walk, the only thing I have to say is; what kind of person invents Barbie and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles microfiber travel bags on wheels?  Is it feasible to continue the ‘family lane’ throughout the entire airport? (make the inventor walk in it with them)

Let’s not forget the, ‘I’m going to stop dead in my tracks and turn around without notice’traveler.  Perhaps someone will invent ‘people signals.’ Hmmm.  That thought may inspire a different blog.

Finally there’s the ‘darting passenger.’  Watch your toes with this one, boy.  You can be merrily walking down the aisle at a moderate-to-quick pace and all of sudden…WHOOSH!  They spot the bathroom. Or the flight status board.  Or their gate.  Kind of reminds me of the movie, ‘UP.’

Squirrel!

Anyway, these people need to be steered.

So all of this goes through my head as I precariously traverse from gate B40 (yes, the LAST gate in the terminal) to baggage claim and I mention to Bob I have these ‘suggestions’ for United and he says, ‘then we wouldn’t have the opportunity for sanctification.’

Oy.

I hate when he’s so smart.

Anyway, while ‘researching’ for this post I stumbled across a pdf online that gave specific transporting instructions for sheep.  I can’t help but find irony in the similarities we travelers share.  I include it for your entertainment…(make sure to note the last paragraph!)

“Of all the species of livestock, sheep are considered the most tolerant of transportation. Many of the requirements for transporting sheep are common sense but they are still very important to ensure good quality meat.

One of the first things to consider is the feed and water before and during the trip. Lambs should be kept off feed and water for at least 12 hours prior to trucking – except in hot conditions. Water should be available for longer trips.

Another major consideration is space requirements. Sheep should have enough space to be able to lie down. Most sheep do not begin to lay down until 5 – 10 hours into the trip. Therefore, the length of the trip should be known before loading sheep. Also, when loading sheep and inside the trucks, there should be non-slip flooring and proper ventilation. The effort needed by animals to keep their balance while the vehicle moves may be demanding in terms of energy requirements and increase the incidence of dark, firm, dry meat.

Weather is another factor when transporting animals. During hot weather, transport at night or early in the morning is recommended. This minimizes heat stress. Also shipment of wet animals in cold weather should be avoided.  Finally, sick animals should not be transported with healthy animals.

Unfamiliar sheep should also not be transported together. This should prevent most behavioral stresses and injuries.”

I’M DONE!!!!

“A Month (or two) in the Life of a Nobody. Me.”

I know you don’t want to hear it, but I am sitting here on the couch (again) and I have nothing better to do (nothing I have the energy to do, that is) but chronicle the past two months of my life.  I am starting to believe my giftedness lies in list making…so here goes, another list.  Call this one

“A Month (or two) in the Life of a Nobody. Me.”

The month of September started well enough; great plans for a great fall…

Started a class on Sanctification at Reformed Theological Seminary
Commenced Systematic Theology at First Baptist
Began my tenure as liaison for Women’s Ministry with the Christian Ed department
Joined the ‘Anchor’ women’s discipleship group at church
Dove into the theology exam for Biblical Counseling
Began leading a small (covenant) group with some wonderful young adults
Continued pre-marital mentoring our now newlywed couple
Persevered in writing curriculum for above
(this is what artists do when they have no Interior Design business- theology—huh?)

anyway… in  conjunction with this ridiculously busy schedule the following “circumstances’ have occurred…

August 30th got ‘the flu’
Turned out to be a sinus infection
Got an antibiotic
Finished the antibiotic and, while exiting my vehicle from a Christian Ed meeting, pinched my sciatic nerve
Fixed the nerve and broke a tooth
Fixed the tooth and got another sinus infection
Got an antibiotic
Washer broke
Loaded Snow Leopard on the Mac and began experiencing a new, garbled version of Safari
Finished the antibiotic and broke another (different) tooth
Computer went away to the Apple hospital to get fixed
Fixed the tooth
Computer came home, not fixed, went to the Genius where the hard drive crashed
Genius is a genius, ‘fixed’ the computer
Had to RELOAD the computer
Three hours (and two new, surprisingly American, tech best friends) later, restored information (including the EXAM) on the computer
Dryer broke (not kidding)
Kamikaze bird hit the back window
Computer restored original problem, back to Genius
New Genius, new idea…seemed to work…
Sinus infection returned, this time it brought ‘friends’ (chest pain and flaming red itchy rashes)
Cable crashed
Got another antibiotic
Computer restored original problem

Out of all this, these are some fascinating statistics I’m sure you will be interested in…

Nights spent sleeping on the couch (due to pain) in the past 60 days; 14
Mornings making a bed I did not sleep in; 14
Days spent on the couch staring out the window; 9
Trips back and forth to the Apple store at South Park mall; 6
Visits to the chiropractor; 25
Appointments at Mecklenburg Medical; 3
Opportunities to catch the Swine Flu while sitting in a Doctor’s waiting room; 3
Hours on the phone with Tech Support; 9.5
New friends at Apple; 5 (Miller, Leo, Alex, Mike, David—2 not-so-nice guys didn’t make the cut)
$$$ spent on above; priceless
Trips back and forth to Walgreens Pharmacy; 5
Rebuilt computer with original problem still occurring; 1
Husband sick of a sick wife; 1
Blog audience tired of my health woes; 1

Hence, the reason I really have nothing else to write than to repeat what I have apparently not yet learned….

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” James 1.2-4

and the conclusion to the Elyse Fitzpatrick quote from Sunday…

“I think that I am wise and know what is best.  His plans confound the wisdom of the wisest man and flay him in the dust.  I deceive myself into believing that I deserve better than this.  He gently reminds me that I deserve an eternity of excruciating flame eating at my soul and separation from His Son.

Peace begins to fill my soul when I remember the truth of the gospel; I am more sinful and flawed than I ever dared believe, more loved and welcome that I ever dared hope.  I deserve less than nothing but have been given everything.”

Half a Savior?

“He, who supposes that Jesus Christ only lived and died and rose again in order to provide justification and forgiveness of sins for His people, has yet much to learn.  Whether he knows it or not, he is dishonoring our blessed Lord and making Him only half a Savior.  The Lord Jesus has undertaken everything that His people’s souls require: not only to deliver them from the guilt of their sins by His atoning death, but from the dominion of their sins, by placing in their hearts the Holy Spirit; not only to justify them, but also to sanctify them.”  JC Ryle
